Working in Bulgaria as an EU Citizen: What You Need to Know

EU citizens can move to Bulgaria, register, and start working with minimal paperwork. Here is the exact checklist — residence registration, tax, healthcare, and your rights.

EU/EEA/Swiss citizens have an unconditional right to live and work in Bulgaria. The catch is administrative — Bulgaria expects you to register your residence inside 90 days. Skip it and you can be fined or struggle to open a bank account.

What you can do day one

  • Sign an employment contract.
  • Open a Bulgarian bank account (passport + local address is enough at most banks).
  • Get a Bulgarian SIM card.
  • Register for the public healthcare scheme via your employer.

Registering your residence (within 90 days)

Visit the Migration Directorate of the Ministry of Interior in your district with your passport, your employment contract or proof of self-sufficiency, and a rental contract. They issue a Certificate of Residence (Удостоверение за пребиваване) on the spot in most districts.

Your worker rights

  • Minimum 20 paid annual leave days, plus public holidays.
  • Statutory probation up to 6 months — both sides can exit with short notice.
  • Equal pay for equal work versus Bulgarian colleagues.
  • Maternity leave: among the most generous in the EU (up to 410 days).

Healthcare in plain English

Once you are employed, your employer pays into the national health insurance fund automatically. Bring your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for your first weeks, then switch fully to the Bulgarian system. Private top-up insurance costs roughly 15–31 EURmonth and is widely used.

Tax basics

10% flat personal income tax. Social security contributions add roughly 13% on the employee side. Your employer files everything; you receive a net wage and a yearly summary. If you keep tax residence in another EU country (say, during your first 6 months), the double-taxation treaty makes sure you are not taxed twice.

Frequently asked

Do I need to learn Bulgarian to get a job?

Not for multilingual roles, but a few polite phrases go a very long way socially and for paperwork at the migration office.

Can my partner come too?

Yes. EU citizen partners follow the same registration path. Non-EU partners can apply for family reunification once you are registered.
